It’s summer time and the flowers are blooming, but you’re noticing ants in your garden. You want to get rid of them, but don’t want to use pesticides. Here are some natural ways to get rid of ants in your garden.

What Kinds of Ants are in the Garden?

Black Ants

If you are looking to identify some of the ants in your garden, you will need to learn about the different kinds of ants. One of the most common types of ants are the black ants. They are usually found in moist environments, but they are also found in dry environments. This is because their offspring requires moisture for survival. The ants are the most irritable creatures on earth. They are capable of killing and injuring the same species. They are also known to kill even humans. The problem of ants is not only due to their biting, but they can also cause serious damage to your property.

Bull Ants

The Bull ants are one of the most aggressive ants in the world. They are known to be so aggressive that they are willing to die for their colony. They are also known to be one of the most painful stings in the world. They are not to be messed with. The venom comes out of the stinger in an amount that can be enormous: as much as 50% of it’s body weight. But as mentioned before, even though they have a huge amount of venom, they do not kill people, however they do cause severe pain.

6 Effective Methods to Get Rid of Ants in the Garden

Ants are a common problem in the garden. They are attracted to the sweet nectar in plants and can quickly destroy your plants. If you have ants in your garden, there are a few steps you can take to get rid of them.  There are many ways to get rid of ants, some are better for your lawn and some are better for your garden. These are a few great ways to eliminate ant problems from both.

  1. Get rid of pests, particularly aphids. Ants don’t hang around to harvest honeydew from their territory when there is no one for them to farm it from.
  2. Artificial sweeteners used to be our best weapon against pesky ants, but it turns out they’re toxic to them and that might make you think again about putting that stuff in your coffee. Ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper can also help repel ants or at least stop them from getting too close to your greenery.
  3. Diatomaceous earth is a totally safe powder which is safe for humans and completely dehydrates ants, slugs and cockroaches. It can be sprinkled around homes and also near nests to keep them away.
  4. Set up a borax & sugar poison trap. But, use them carefully – though borax and boric acid are natural compounds, they can be harmful to both humans and animals.
  5. Pour boiling water on the anthill. This technique only does work if you know where the ants’ nest is, of course – however it can be highly effective.
  6. A final way to rid of ants in the garden is to put out a dish of ant bait. You can purchase ant bait from a home or garden center. Ant bait is a food that ants will carry back to the nest and feed to the other ants.

Side note: Keep in mind, ants create structures that can resist rain and flooding. So it might take a few attempts before you kill the queen (and take out the colony)

Conclusion

We’ve gone over several methods on getting rid of those pesky ants from your garden. It’s best to use a combination of the methods above for the best result.
